And a decade in Tenetun. After that, the International Space Station (ISS) will be closed. Earlier, the US space agency, NASA, the controller of the International Space Station, had planned to bring the astronauts working there back to Earth.
The location of the space station in Earth orbit about 400 km above the earth's surface. It has been orbiting the earth once a day and night at an interval of about one and a half hours since 1997. According to the American media CNN, due to age, there are many cracks in the body of the space station. In addition, there is a risk that the safety of astronauts on the space station may be compromised due to the accumulation of space debris ('space debris' or 'space junk') in the Earth's orbit. In this situation, NASA has decided to close it in 2031.
NASA does not want to put the International Space Station in Earth orbit after closing. Because in that case, the amount of space-waste is likely to increase in the future. In the future, the danger of spacecraft and astronauts will increase. So NASA scientists have the idea of taking the space station out of Earth's orbit and sinking it in a remote area of the Pacific Ocean.
NASA spends tens of millions of dollars every year to operate and maintain the International Space Station. In addition to research over the past few years, the US space agency plans to use the space station commercially to reduce the burden on US taxpayers. There are also proposals to open the door to space tourism and build a film studio. In December, NASA announced that agreements had been reached with three companies for commercial use of the space station.
Last November, Russia smashed Cosmos-1408, a canceled intelligence satellite floating in Earth orbit. The security of the International Space Station is in danger due to the broken pieces of the cosmos that are spinning at high speed.
